It's finally starting to feel like Spring in the city. The New York Convention is around the corner and more people are stumbling in off the street looking for a little something after another long, long winter. We're busy renovating and freshening up and getting some new flash up in the front of the shop. I've been meaning to post this picture for a while. We had an interesting visitor stop by Daredevil the other day. A retired woman tattoo artist named DC. DC said that she hadn't done a tattoo for at least 25 years but she had some good stories and a few tattoos done in Brooklyn long ago. She said she learned from an artist named Storm who worked out of Ohio who had learned from Stoney Sinclair. I'm guessing DC was a pretty tough lady back in the day before tattoos were as gentrified as they are now. There weren't many lady tattooers when I started out. I can only imagine what things were like farther back. Anyone who's tattooed gets the question or hears the jokes about what's gonna happen when you get older with all those tattoos. Silly question in my book. Those tattoos are a glimpse into some good stories and past adventures, a postcard from long ago. I'm hoping DC stops by again. I'd love to hear some tales from her time in the business when tattoo shops were scary places to step into and not for the faint of heart. |

Make sure you pick up this weeks issue of Time Out New York featuring the food and drink awards. Dale May shot on location and all of the tattoos were drawn by Daredevil tattoo artist and applied via Photoshop by Dale. Here's a link to a slideshow of all the tattoos with credits for the artists. They also posted a short video of the shoot.
Most of the chefs who hang out at our shops aren't short on real tattoos and several of them have been getting big time attention on Food Network lately with the Chopped All-Stars series. We're very proud of our friend Aaron Sanchez who is closing in on a Daredevil body suit. Aaron is more than a customer to everyone in the shop and we were so happy to see him battle it out to the end. Other Daredevil chef customers on the show were Nate Appleman tattooed by Diego, Anne Burrel tattooed by Beau, and judge Chris Santos tattooed by Michelle.

I am very proud to anounce the opening for a group show at Max Fish put together by our own Chuck D . Chuck has worked very hard in a very short amount of time to put together a massive collection of work from local artist that will be on display all month at Max Fish, two doors over from Daredevil Tattoo. Max Fish owner Ulli suggested the theme of flowers for the show, appropriate for April. Apropro also in that the Fish gets to bloom one more year on the LES thanks to a lease renewal after their threatened closure.
Spring is finally in the air for all of us as evidenced by the boys of Daredevil comparing notes on how ripped up they will be getting for summer and practicing their push-ups, sit-ups, and whatever this is. The boys are looking forward to working with their shirts off to show off their manly physiques (a big seller at the shop).
Join us tonight for the openeing from 7:00 on at the Fish. Come on by and smell the flowers, (or the paint drying) and congratulate Chuck on a job well done and toast another year of Max Fish.

Id like to start off by letting everyone know that I've updated my portfolio and I'm still on the lookout for new customers, I'm even trying to sneak in a few customers on the days I work the front. I'm trying my hardest to tattoo as regularly as possible, meaning every day i'm trying to do at LEAST one tattoo. I still have numerous questions and I'm just so thankful to have such amazing artists helping me out everyday. although the long hours and sleepless nights can get tiring, I'm the happiest I've ever been. I'm doing exactly what I want to do and all I want is to learn more.
