INKED Icon – December issue of Inked Magazine E-mail
Blogs
Written by Brad

Check out this month’s issue of Inked Magazine. Yours truly is featured in the Inked Icon section with a three page interview by Marisa over at Needlesandsins.com. Here’s a brief excerpt from the article…

INKED: This interview is for our Icon section-

BRAD FINK: What’s up with this “INKED Icon”?

That’s what we call the renowned artists we profile who have contributed to tattooing over the years and continue to advance the art.

Wow. I’m flattered, but you’re making me feel self-conscious. [Laughs.] Icons are people who are dead or at least old. I only just turned 39.

You’re nevertheless internationally known and respected in tattooing. Enjoy it.

I have a hard time with it when, at tattoo conventions, people come up and ooh and aah over me, because I feel like I just started – like I was just one of those kids who went to their first convention and saw Jack Rudy or one of those dudes and was blown away.

You’ve been tattooing more than twenty years.  What do you mean when you say you still feel like you “just started”?

A lot of times I find myself saying how amazed I am at how fast time goes. A couple of weeks ago, a guy who I used to tattoo in my kitchen in high school came into the shop to get another tattoo. Or my grade school art teacher just interviewed me for a local magazine in St. Louis.  I ended up tattooing her and she was so happy.

Of course, I’m definitely happy where I’m at and cherishing that I have three successful shops with great partners – Michelle Myles and Mark Andrews-and most recently, partners in a clothing line called Me Against the World. When I started I wasn’t thinking about where I’d end up. I just did what I did and never gave it much thought.  All of a sudden here I am, an INKED Icon.

Remember, in 1987, people didn’t put these fuckers on a pedestal like they do now. None of this reality TV shit. We were just skin mechanics, laborers, blue-collar dudes. I’m from the old mind-set. Tattooing is something I cherish and am protective of. Although I will say that with all the TV shows and media, there is more positive than negative coming from it. People are more educated when they come into the shop.

nu2.jpgI'm a little delirious right now I haven't gone to bed and we need to wake up in two hours to leave for JFK but I get so crazy preparing to leave I won't be able to sleep anyway. So just to let everyone know Brad and I will be going to the 2nd annual Singapore Tattoo Convention ! I've only heard really great things about the show and I am certainly looking forward to 80 degrees. The City's been kinda lousy lately with the weather. I'll try and post while we're away I definitely will be getting some fun video clips at the show. I'll even try to twitter the situation while I'm away, how's that

Ok here's a little holiday cheer to stuff your stocking. I had to click the play button a couple times to get it going. Big Steve put this together. The lineup includes Mina, Chef Aaron Sanchez, Andre, Brad and Piercer Pete. It's kind of like a warm up for Mina's dance recital. I like how Dre looks so happy.

Daredevil and Fun City wish a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

Unless anyone has appointments booked or feels like working we're closed tomorrow. So give a call before coming by to check if anyone is available. Christmas we are definitely closed but the 26th we're ready to take your holiday bonus in trade for new tattoo to show off to the family.

Yule a Go-Go E-mail

This is the best holiday gift idea ever. They've taken a great holiday tradition and made it new, improved and all sexed up! Some genius decided to take the tried and true yule log and add (almost) naked ladies - dancing to music! Yule a Go-Go features 13 beautiful ladies in all their burleque glory dancing to your favorite holiday tunes.

I don't know about you but I was ecstatic when they brought back the yule log on Channel 11. I learned all sorts of cool stuff on Wikipedia about the yule log. It was created in 1966 by the president of WPIX as a present to New Yorkers who lived in apartments with no fireplaces. The original yule log was filmed in the Gracie mansion fireplace. There was a slight mis-hap when a stray spark damaged and antique rug worth $4000. The yule log was yanked in 1990 due to the high cost of running it with no commercials but in 2001 it was brought back after the September 11th attacks as a kind of TV "comfort food". It was the most watched TV program in metropolitan NY for Christmas Day and has aired every year since. I know I should have posted about this earlier but it is available in some stores in case it's too late for mail order. "Put the "boob" back in boob tube!"

ps. Here'e a clip of Yule Log III complete with directors commentary
