It's finally starting to feel like Spring in the city. The New York Convention is around the corner and more people are stumbling in off the street looking for a little something after another long, long winter. We're busy renovating and freshening up and getting some new flash up in the front of the shop. I've been meaning to post this picture for a while. We had an interesting visitor stop by Daredevil the other day. A retired woman tattoo artist named DC. DC said that she hadn't done a tattoo for at least 25 years but she had some good stories and a few tattoos done in Brooklyn long ago. She said she learned from an artist named Storm who worked out of Ohio who had learned from Stoney Sinclair. I'm guessing DC was a pretty tough lady back in the day before tattoos were as gentrified as they are now. There weren't many lady tattooers when I started out. I can only imagine what things were like farther back. Anyone who's tattooed gets the question or hears the jokes about what's gonna happen when you get older with all those tattoos. Silly question in my book. Those tattoos are a glimpse into some good stories and past adventures, a postcard from long ago. I'm hoping DC stops by again. I'd love to hear some tales from her time in the business when tattoo shops were scary places to step into and not for the faint of heart.
