Just got back from the screening of the Sailor Jerry Documentary in Tribeca. The line was around the corner to get in, I'm not sure if it was for the movie or the free rum.
World famous clothing designer Ed Hardy figured prominently in the interviews. Apparently Hardy used to be a tattoo artist and was a huge fan of Jerry's clothing line. Hardy left tattooing and quickly changed his focus to fashion to work with Jerry as his protege. Unfortunately for Hardy Jerry's company was deeply in debt and in a desperate attempt to raise funds for his company Jerry became involved in the dangerous world of bootlegging. Jerry continued to run his rum until he was gunned down by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Honolulu. Hardy, overcome by grief at the loss of his mentor turned to his other love, ganster rap and released a single. In the 80's Hardy became a prominent figure in the west coast hip-hop scene before launching his own clothing line. Hardy built upon Jerrys original concept for crude drawings on t-shirts but took the idea to a whole new level by adding sparkles which lauched his line into the stratosphere. Hardy's hip-hop friends loved his clothes so much they wore them all the time. His two best friends Flavor Flav and Brett Micheals can't stop wearing his clothes and even wore them on their reality shows Flavor of Love and Rock of Love. Thanks to Sailor Jerry Ed Hardy has since become a cultural icon.
Just got an email for an upcoming art show called "Tattoo" at the Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts Gallery . The press release is a little nauseating, or maybe that's just me. Something about the art world, the corporate world, the television world....all these folks running roughshod over the tattoo world. Here's a little clip,
"The iconic imagery of the tattoo subculture is easily accessible to even the most casual viewer, with its own distinct formal tradition and compositional canon. Plumes of smoke turn into devils and grinning skulls cover the bodies like a Gothic cornucopia; organic forms spiral abstractly over and around human limbs; pin-up girls and angels alike wink coyly from biceps; names and faces of the dead stretch and fold as skin ages and sags.
When the imagery of the tattoo is isolated from the human canvas, or when the “tattooed” becomes the subject of art, the ink can become a distinct portrait of the subject, revealing histories, ethnicities, personality quirks, fetishes, addictions, conquests, allegiances, and tragedy. This show presents the tattoo and the tattooed within the realm of fine art, providing a vivid and expansive portrait of the culture of the tattoo. "
I know, that's just art speak, times have changed I'm supposed to embrace it but instead I feel like I'm about to OD on all of it.
Despite my aversion there are some interesting artist/photographers
included. The picture at left from the show is by Max Snow.
Attention to anybody seeking an appointment with me at Dare Devil. There's been some confusion from the contacts/ emails that I have been receiving about getting tattooed. These are my pending dates that I should be in NYC. These dates do not reflect the days I will be working at Dare Devil. I am working primarily by appointment and would prefer to arrange in person consultations. These days merely represent the days I will physically be in NYC and or out of San Diego. If you wish to get tattooed by me you must call me to arrange an consultation. The only way to ensure an appointment is to call me at 619 307 9433 and to set up a time for us to meet. You may email me at

Use the link below to check out a little write up I recently had in Prick Magazine.
The shop has been put back together after the show. Our guest have gone home. I'm hoping everyone enjoyed my little convention movie. And Chuck is in town until Tuesday. It's nice to have Chuck back for a little while and we've been keeping him busy. He'll be back again in July but give a shout to Daredevil if you would like to catch him this time around.
I feel I should clarify Big Steve's most recent post about his shitty day at Fun City. A girl came in to the shop and did in fact poo on the floor. Of all the crazy's who have been through the door at Fun City this was a nice normal looking college age girl wearing a dress. She said she would like to get tattooed, asked to use our bathroom and pooped on her way to the back. She did clean up after herself when she came back out. She asked if this had ever happened before. Nope, this was a first for us. Maybe it's good luck.
She ended up not getting her tattoo. I thought it was crazy when I saw the same thing on Flavor of Love. Maybe she saw that episode and thought it was kind of common.
